They could have used CSS to make those buttons, then the text of the "A" would show you exactly what the new text size would look like.

I experimented with the following icons:

If you click the first icon, the figure appears directly on the page. If you click the second icon, the figure appears in a popup window. If JavaScript is not enabled, then either icon just links to the image.
